SUMMARY:Tree Planting in the Perry South Greenway
DESCRIPTION:Description\nLet’s plant some trees together! Help CSAC and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) add 19 new trees to the Perry South Greenway Entry Garden as part of the TreeVitalize Pittsburgh project. \nLearn about different types of native trees\, proper tree planting practices\, and tree care while making a difference in the Charles Street Valley during this 3 hour event. All are welcome to come out and volunteer. Food will be provided. We’ll be planting rain or shine! \nFor additional details\, please visit the WPC website. Be sure to register online as a volunteer ahead of the event! \n \n \nRegister Online\n\n \n \n\n\n\nWhy plant trees?\nThe Perry South Greenway Entry Garden was established by CSAC and our partners in Fall 2023. The first phase of the project included designing the landscape\, preparing the site\, and planting native shrubs and flowers. All existing trees on site were healthy and able to be preserved. \nThe next phase in our design plan includes adding native trees to establish a canopy and understory that will to add to the beauty and ecological diversity of the entry garden. \nCanopy trees are tall\, and provide a significant amount of shade. Understory trees are smaller\, and exist beneath a canopy alongside shrubs and other plants.  \nThese trees will provide food and cover for wildlife\, remove pollution from the air\, and help manage storm water — making our community a healthier place.

SUMMARY:Tree Pruning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Description\nLet’s care for our trees! Join CSAC and California-Kirkbride Neighbors for a free tree pruning workshop by Tree Pittsburgh! Why is pruning important? \n \n \n\n\n\nPruning young trees is one of the most important actions you can take to help them thrive in the built environment. Whether in your backyard\, on your front sidewalk\, or in your neighborhood park\, shaping young trees through proper pruning practices will help them grow healthy and strong\, and prevent potential problems in the future. \n\n Kelsey Munsick from Tree Pittsburgh\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\nDetails\nWe’ll be on the move during this event! The group will meet at Northside Coalition For Fair Housing for a brief introduction\, then head over to Bright-Chuck Point.  \nFrom there\, Tree Pittsburgh’s ISA Certified Arborists will teach us how to prune\, and we’ll head out to work on some trees around the neighborhood!  \nTools\, training\, and light refreshments will be provided. Please dress for the weather! This event is ideal for individuals ages 16 and up. \nPlease register online through the Tree Pittsburgh website before the event so we know how many people to expect.

SUMMARY:Greenway Stewardship Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Description\nStewards\, partners\, and volunteers will work on-site to plant and mulch native perennial flowers and shrubs in the entry garden at the North Charles Street / Perry South Greenway. Refreshments and swag bags will be provided! \nThe stewardship work days on October 20 & 21\, 2023 build upon the planning\, design\, and site preparation work done by the Charles Street Area Corporation and its partners\, including Real Design\, Inc.\, Mistick Construction\, the Student Conservation Association\, and the City of Pittsburgh. \nFuture phases of work will include adding trees\, signage\, and lighting to the entry garden. The Charles Street Area Corporation will lead stewardship efforts and activate the greenway with events and activities as the space develops. \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\nNATIVE PLANTS\nAccording to the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources\, a native plant is “one which occurred within this region before colonization by Europeans.” Using native plants means that this landscape will be adapted to our local climate and conditions\, provide food for birds\, attract pollinators\, and promote native biodiversity. Native plants also require less maintenance than non-native ones. \nNative Plants Include: \n \n \n\nHobblebush (Viburnum lantanoides) \nAllegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) \nWinterberry (Ilex verticillata) \nJoe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum) \nAND MORE!

SUMMARY:CSV Gateway Memorial Planting
DESCRIPTION:Description\nBring a flower to plant in memory of someone during our CSV Gateway Memorial gardening event on July 15\, 2023. \nCommunities are made up of people. We want our shared spaces\, like the garden at Bright-Chuck Point\, to reflect the care that we have for residents and friends of the Charles Street Valley — past\, present\, and future. \nHonor those no longer with us by planting in their memory. \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\nBright-CHuck Point\nBright-Chuck Point (AKA “Sprout Park”) is located at the intersection of Brighton Road and North Charles Street.  \nIn 2013\, Charles Street Area Council and our partners led the planning to create this community garden and walkway at the gateway to our neighborhood. \n10 years later\, the garden continues to be maintained by the community and remains a point of pride for our neighbors. \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n This is the rescheduled date for our CSV Gateway Memorial Day Planting event (originally May 27\, 2023). We hope you can make it!
