Tree Planting in the Perry South Greenway

April 6, 2024 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Description

Let's plant some trees together! Help CSAC and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) add 19 new trees to the Perry South Greenway Entry Garden as part of the TreeVitalize Pittsburgh project.

Learn about different types of native trees, proper tree planting practices, and tree care while making a difference in the Charles Street Valley during this 3 hour event. All are welcome to come out and volunteer. Food will be provided. We'll be planting rain or shine!

For additional details, please visit the WPC website. Be sure to register online as a volunteer ahead of the event!

Why plant trees?

The Perry South Greenway Entry Garden was established by CSAC and our partners in Fall 2023. The first phase of the project included designing the landscape, preparing the site, and planting native shrubs and flowers. All existing trees on site were healthy and able to be preserved.

The next phase in our design plan includes adding native trees to establish a canopy and understory that will to add to the beauty and ecological diversity of the entry garden.

Canopy trees are tall, and provide a significant amount of shade. Understory trees are smaller, and exist beneath a canopy alongside shrubs and other plants.

These trees will provide food and cover for wildlife, remove pollution from the air, and help manage storm water -- making our community a healthier place.
