Greenway Stewardship Work Day
October 20, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Description
Stewards, partners, and volunteers will work on-site to plant and mulch native perennial flowers and shrubs in the entry garden at the North Charles Street / Perry South Greenway. Refreshments and swag bags will be provided!
The stewardship work days on October 20 & 21, 2023 build upon the planning, design, and site preparation work done by the Charles Street Area Corporation and its partners, including Real Design, Inc., Mistick Construction, the Student Conservation Association, and the City of Pittsburgh.
Future phases of work will include adding trees, signage, and lighting to the entry garden. The Charles Street Area Corporation will lead stewardship efforts and activate the greenway with events and activities as the space develops.
NATIVE PLANTS
According to the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, a native plant is "one which occurred within this region before colonization by Europeans." Using native plants means that this landscape will be adapted to our local climate and conditions, provide food for birds, attract pollinators, and promote native biodiversity. Native plants also require less maintenance than non-native ones.
Native Plants Include:
- Hobblebush (Viburnum lantanoides)
- Allegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea)
- Winterberry (Ilex verticillata)
- Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum)
- AND MORE!
